Self Care for Moms

In an article by Margarita Tartakovsky, MS, moms of young kids are encouraged to see the relationship with their young children not as symbiotic, but as parasitic.   As a creature which depends on you for their own well-being, your child is a parasite - and you are the host!  And thus, sacrificing your own wellness for the sake of your child is actually counter productive - a parasite's health is dependent on the good health of it's host. 

Eight tips for self care for moms:

1.  Practice self care in intervals - even just for 15 minutes at a time.

2.  Ask for (even imperfect) help from someone you trust.

3.  Practice mindfulness - morning breathing exercises, focusing on the sensory experience of daily chores, etc.

4.  Look to the future with some daydreaming - take a break from the here and now - it's okay!

5.  Lower expectations - don't try to be the perfect mom with the perfect kids - just be ENOUGH.

6.  Say no when necessary, but also say yes - help others - it's a good distraction.

7.  Build a support network - play dates or online groups to connect with those in similar places/stages.

8.  Don't feel guilty - self-care isn't selfish!
