Just breathe!

Do you have times when you feel stressed, overwhelmed, anxious, nervous, or edgy? Sometimes those feelings are so strong that they affect our ability to cope.  Some of the common symptoms of anxiety and panic include:
rapid heartbeat
shortness of breath
overactive mind - racing thoughts
difficulty sleeping

Breathing exercises are a proven way to relieve stress - they’re fast, simple, free, and can be performed by anyone, anywhere, any time.   You can do this exercise at home, at work, in a meeting, at school, even in line at the store.  (if you're driving, it's best to pull your car over and park somewhere safely before doing relaxation exercises)

Yes, we all breathe, all day long.  But it's the WAY that we breathe that can help with anxiety and panic.  Follow these simple steps to be sure that your breath is working for you.
Sit or stand in a relaxed position.
If possible, close your eyes.
Slowly inhale through your nose, counting to 5. Expand your abdomen rather than raising your shoulders. Rest your hands on your belly to be sure it is rising.
Let the air out from your mouth, counting to 8 as it leaves your lungs.
Repeat several times - you decide how long.
That’s it!  It's that easy!  And it really works!
