Sadness or Depression?

There is a difference.  Natasha Tracy reminds us that sadness is usually about one specific thing (like job loss or an argument with a friend), is time limited (we know it won't last forever), and is not pervasive (we can also experience and recognize the good things).  

In real clinical major depression, sadness is only one of the symptoms. It must meet 5 of the following symptoms including 1 of the first 2 on the list:

depressed mood
decreased interest in things once enjoyed

Blue Monday

For some, today is Blue Monday - the first Monday after the close of the holiday season.  It can be a hard day for those who suffer from SAD (Seasonal Affective Disorder).  And this year it could be especially blue due to the extreme cold temperatures experienced by much of the country.

Feeling SAD? It could be Seasonal Affective Disorder

Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD) is depression that shows itself at a certain time of the year.  Symptoms usually start in the late fall and progress into the winter months.  SAD can cause depression in the spring or summer, but this is not as common as in the fall and winter.  It often increases after the holidays are over and winter is not feeling as festive.

Symptoms of SAD may start out mild and become worse later in the winter:
  • Depression
  • Hopelessness
  • Anxiety
  • Loss of energy
