Blue Monday

Posted by Sara Levitsky on Monday, January 6, 2014 Under: Depression

For some, today is Blue Monday - the first Monday after the close of the holiday season.  It can be a hard day for those who suffer from SAD (Seasonal Affective Disorder).  And this year it could be especially blue due to the extreme cold temperatures experienced by much of the country.

SAD is a mood disorder which affects many people as a result of short days and low sunlight exposure.  Combine it's symptoms (depression, low energy and lack of interest in people and activities) with post-holiday stressors (over-spending. over-eating, over-drinking, relationship conflicts) with brutal weather and we may see much more depressed mood this week and this month.

Things that can help with Blue Monday and SAD:

Exposure to sunlight - go outside if you can
Open blinds and drapes to let light indoors
Light therapy
